SUPERVISOR’S WEEKLY UPDATE

This past weekend I was invited to speak at the Au Sable Acres Membership meeting. It was great to see such a large turn out of members. I was able to talk about the grants we are applying for this year, the increased assessed values in the town, and short term rental impacts. I feel the conversation was informative for both the residents of Au Sable Acres and for me as well. I look forward to future meetings with the membership.

I was able to stop by the Tahawus Center on Saturday afternoon for the opening of the CraftWorks exhibit. It amazes me the amount of talent in our area. If you want to see this exhibit, it runs through July.

I would like to welcome a new business to the Town of Jay, NewVida Bistro. This is the first segment of the business to open at NewVida Preserve at the former Paleface Ski Center.

Lastly, tomorrow is the Town of Jay 225th Anniversary and 4th of July Celebration. Parade starts at Noon and a day of actives will follow at the Jay Village Green and the Jay Volunteer Fire Department. The day will conclude with fireworks at dusk.  See you there!

Hope you have a great week,

Matt.

Youth Commission Softball and Baseball are currently underway at the fields in the Grove. I
would like to thank all of our volunteer coaches for the work they do with the kids and the love
they put into the fields. Joe Lincoln and Josh Crowningshield did an incredible job over the
weekend clearing the pesky weeds from the infield which helps our fields look better and better
each year. It definitely takes teamwork between the Town of Black Brook, the Town of Jay,
volunteers, and parents to make our community the great place we call home! Soccer signups are
underway for the fall season, reach out to the Town of Black Brook or my office for more details.
Essex County Office of the Aging will be encouraging individuals to visit Farmers Markets this
summer by offering coupons to qualifying individuals. On July 14th from 11:00am until 12:00pm,
they will be at the nutrition site located in the Community Center to disburse coupon booklets to
income eligible individuals and families. Check out the attached flyer and stop by to get yours.
Have a great week,
Matt.

SUPERVISOR’S WEEKLY UPDATE

Today, the third grade class from Au Sable Forks Elementary School helped the Town of Jay’s Parks Department rake and clean Grove Park.  This was part of an annual tradition for the AFES Cleanup Day.  On this warm June day, they were a tremendous help in removing leaves and limbs for the park to be enjoyed throughout the summer.  As part of our thanks, we gave each student a Town of Jay/AFES Cleanup Day t-shirt.  We hope you had fun and see you again next year!

Last week I was able to tour a couple additional Essex County properties.  As a member of the Fairgrounds Task Force, we toured the Essex County Fairgrounds with the Essex County Ag Society and Essex County DPW.  The reason for this tour was to pinpoint issues that need to be addressed before the 2023 Essex County Fair in August, and any other issues that need to be worked on.  I was amazed to see how much better the fairgrounds looked this year, as opposed to year’s past, by having a year round grounds employee on the property.  Our goal is to hold more events at the fairgrounds, and find other sources of revenue for this property.

While I was in Westport, I was given a tour of the recently built Essex County Nutrition Center.  This building is a perfect example of a building built for purpose.  Since this is the kitchen where all the meals for the Older Americans in Essex County, every surface of this building is able to be scrubbed and rinsed off.  Everything has a purpose, even the windows were built to allow for racks and shelving to be placed under them.   This building was built with budgeted and grant funds and is perfect for the county’s needs.

Lastly, as we approach the 4th of July, were are in need of volunteers for the activities that take place that day.  I have reached out to several school organizations, with little response.  If you have an organization or are an individual who is interested in helping, we will be having a meeting on Thursday, June 1st at 7:00pm at the Community Center.  Stop in and we can get you on the volunteer list.

Have a great week,
Matt.

MEMORIAL DAY 2023

The Town of Jay offices will be closed on Monday, May 29th for Memorial Day. Supervisor’s Office will resume normal operations at 8:00am on Tuesday. Town Clerk office will open at 12:00pm on Tuesday. Have a great holiday weekend!

SUPERVISOR’S WEEKLY UPDATE

This past weekend we welcomed over 25 volunteers to help clean and spruce up Douglas Park at the Covered Bridge in the Town of Jay.  We were able to weed the perennial gardens, sidewalks and courts.  We added new cedar mulch in all of the gardens.  I would like to thank the Parks Committee, DPW Director Kevin Lincoln, and Parks employee Paul Benway for working on a Saturday to make our town look amazing.   Also a huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Au Sable Valley for providing refreshments for the event.  Attached is a picture of the volunteers hard at work!

We held a 4th of July/225th Anniversary meeting this past week.  Things are shaping up nicely for this to be a huge event.  With that said, we are in need of volunteers.  We are looking for volunteers to help in booths, run bounce houses, and to set up and clean-up the event.  We will soon be soliciting funding to help offset the cost of the fireworks which will be done by Coyote Fireworks.  If you are interested in volunteering or donating, please reach out to my office at 518-647-2204 or email supervisor@townofjayny.gov.

Lastly, I was able to take a tour of the Essex County Fish Hatchery today with a few other Essex County Supervisors, County Manager Mike Mascarenas, Essex County DPW Director Jim Dougan and Supervising Fish Hatchery Technician Chris Barber.  We were able to see the improvements to the water intake system, buildings and tanks.  This is an operation that Essex County was handed by the state after 50 years of operation.  Now we must maintain this aging facility with only county funds.  The fish hatchery is a very valuable resource, as fishing is a huge part of our economy in Essex County.  This fish hatchery stocks over 40,000 trout (Brook, Brown and Rainbow) in each of the 18 towns in the county.  As we continue to improve this hidden gem of Essex County, we would like to take advantage of some of the educational opportunities this place offers.

Have a great week,
Matt.
