Neat site. My family lived in Jay until 1959, or 1960. The
pictures and history bring back lots of memories even though I
was small when we moved. Our family continued to visit there for
many years. John Douglass, Palmer, Alaska jjdouglass@hotmail.com.

Comments: In the 1960s my family vacationed at a small resort
with shops and restaurant named Tirolerland. Please forgive me
if I have misspelled the name, but I believe I have it correct.
It was an authentic reproduction of the German town and we had a
wonderful time. The restaurant had delicious German food also.
Could you please give me any information about it? My email
address is zeno333@yahoo.com.
Thanks!

Our car broke down in your town on Fri. Oct.7th, as a result
we spent 4 hrs. waiting for it to be repaired. Not only were the
people who worked in the garage (Devins) courteous, competent
and friendly, everyone else we met who worked in or visited the
deli was equally pleasant. Best of luck with the bridge project,
it is one of the the most beautiful areas we visited on our
stay. Also the cheese we bought at the deli was so delicious we
wish we had got more! Is that possible? Keep up the good work,
we'll be back. Dennis O'Connell(denocon@optonline.net)

Just to let the folks know whats happening around the Township

Many new and improvements are in the works.
First and foremost the JEMS group will build a great new
building next to the Village Green. Adding onto the "old
firehouse", extending into the adjoining vacant lot.
Young admirer of Arto Manaco, Christopher Straight is building

I and my sister and parents have fond memories of several
visits to the Land of Makebelive in the 60s. Over the years I
have chanced to met a few other people who also visited the Land
of Makebelieve as children or with their children, and they all
express the same fondness for the place. We all felt that it was
the best compared with other regional places like the Enchanted
Forest of Santas workshop. It would be awsome if the place could
be restored and opened even in some limited fashion.

What ever happened to the Land of Make Believe? Did it go
out of business? When I was young, maybe 5 or 6 years old, I
remember my parents taking me there.
WebEditor Note: The Land Of Make Believe was
closed in 1980 and was the creation of Arto Monaco who has
passed away but a local group in town have formed the Arto
Monaco Historical Society and their website is.........

Dear Town of Jay and visitors,
My name is Christopher Straight and I have lived
here in Jay all my life. Jay is one of the most simple but full
of activity. I was a little disapointed about how they remade
the Covered Bridge. The old... I mean new covered bridge lookes
good but when the fite came about the old covered bridge and the
"old" covered bridge is gone!? I guess, its just
another story that I can tell my children & grandchildren
when I'm in my rocking chair. Just to let everybody know I hope
to fallow in Arto Monaco's foot steps. I will never be Arto but
Arto was My Hero! In the past year and I hope in the coming
years to run my own paper The Valley Road Pot Hole Press. The
funny paper similar to the Cactus Flatts Bagette from The Land
OF MakeBelieve. Someday I will have my own Land Of MaKeBelieve
hopefully in the Town of Jay. Look for me in the coming years.

Dear Jay,
I have been visiting the Adirondacks since I was a child.
My father went to Hawkeye Trail Camps on Silver Lake in 40's.
He bought property in 1955 and built an A-frame cabin
there. I spent many summers (1973-1977) at that same Camp
until it closed in 1977, because the owner Helen Post Hartz (Hartzie)
passes away and nobody took over running the camp. My
grandfather ended up selling the A-frame sometime in the 90's.
So the family ended up renting the cabin that my father
built. My sister and I used to drive around getting lost
on all the back roads until we came upon the covered bridge.
What a site, the stream was so beautiful and the water so
clear. We've been coming to the river in Jay every year to
enjoy the cool waters and now my children play there. My
question is what is the date of the covered bridge? When
was it erected? My husband and I were there when they
closed it down when a tire of a truck (school bus, maybe?) went
through the boards on the bottom. I'm thinking it was
about the year 1987? Please let me know. Thanks for the
web-site. Beth Ann (Houck) Svoboda misbas1003@yahoo.com

My dad and his family were born and raised in the area, and
many of them still live here. I remember all the trips that were
made when I was a child to this area. Swimming in the Ausable
between Jay and Ausable Forks, or visiting the Land of
Makebelieve, or camping at the campsite between Upper Jay and
Keene..those were some very happy memories. I am interested in
Adirondack theme parks, I collect memorabillia especially from
the obscure ones no longer in operation. I am looking for any
information on, or memorabillia of "Prehistoric
Garden"(later known as "Mystery Spot"). Any
information would be appreciated. Thank you and have a great New
Year!!

for such a wonderful town! We have a family-oriented live

up in Jay or SL and opening a quiet little theatre there. Even
looked into bringing a show up there last year. Alas, life gets
in the way. Anyhow. I'm a preservation buff, and the restoration

I was raised in the town of Jay, left there in 1959 when my
mother Dixie Williams passed away, I have never forgotten my
roots or the way of life there in Jay, N.Y., where everyone knew
everyone else and really cared! All our neighbors were
wonderful, Ray & Naomi Williams, Ray & Flossie Ward,
Reggie & Ramona Thwaits, Gib & Esther Manley, Mac &
Helen Mc Donald, what wonderful people. I have traveled
all over the United States, but never have I or my husband and 2
daughters ever found a more beautiful place to visit or live
than the Adirondacks. If you haven't ever been to Jay and
surrounding areas and are looking for a real "Norman
Rockwell" town, then visit Jay you will find it there!

thru 90's in the Adirondack region and miss it dearly. What
ever happened to Land of Make Believe, Ole McDonalds Farm (Lake
Placid), Land of 1000 Animals, Frontier Town. It seems
like yesterday that everyone had one those attractions cardboard
advertisments wired to their bumpers. I hope the region
never surrenders it's rural charms.

Except for a brief tour (shown an old Family Cemetery and Farm)
I was given of Jay many years ago I have never been to Jay.
I have always wanted to get back to spend time exploring
the Town. My 5th Great Grandparents, Obadiah and Sarah
Coolidge, settled in Jay in 1804. My Great-Great
Grandfather Olvin Coolidge left in 1862 to serve in the Civil
War and after the War moved to St Lawrence County severing my
Ancestor Ties to Jay. The Town of Jay Website
was very useful in expanding my knowledge of Jay and helping me
plan a visit. Looking forward to visiting Jay this Fall or
next Spring.

Finding this web site really made me remember my childhood, summers spent on my Grandmothers farm (Jenny Ryan Allen) on Green Street in Ausable Forks,or at my Aunts house (Doris and Jr Richards) on Glen Road in Jay. Everyone should get a chance to visit "God's Country". Thanks for the memories.

Our family ( 30 people ) will be vacationing the week of 7/13/02-7/20/02. We are staying at the Otter Cottage & AuSable Lodge in Wilmington. Your Web site has given me some suggestions on things to see and do including visiting your town of Jay.
To all who are searching for peace beauty and friendly people Jay is the place! We were there during a stay in Wilmington 2 years ago and will return again this year it is a beautiful town full of beautiful people and a place I'd be proud to call home
I loved your pictures. The Town of Jay will be forever in my heart. I try to visit every chance I get in my excursions North. I spent all the summers of my youth in Au Sable Forks. Memories: the playground every summer day, swimming at Silver Lake, watching the Firemen play ball on Sunday's, fishing above the paper mill, sodas at Quirks Drug store, the spinning wheel to win tableware between shows at the movies, and buying fresh baked bread and sticky buns at Garsaws(sorry if I spelled that wrong!). I consider it my Hometown! John Johnson
